Second priority of my Hong Kong trip after Jacky Cheung's concert is food! I have yet to try many more but how much can we eat in a day? Gosh~~ I wish I have many stomachs or I can digest in a finger snap time.
Ho Hung Kee
A restaurant famous for wanton mee 云吞面 and harzi mee 虾子面. I found this shop while looking for famous harzi mee.
Location:
2, Sharp Street East, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Although it's the same name 炸酱面, but it is not the same as how Taiwan or China did it. It's pork cooked in tomato sauce on noodles. I love the noodle which is thinner than normal, it's Q and most importantly, very little to no alkaline water 碱水taste.
A noodle I will go back for.
Harzi Noodle with Wanton
I have heard of this noodle for so long and yet I've not tried it before until now. It's wanton noodle sprinkled with prawn powder. After you mix then all up, I can't taste the prawn powder at all. So, unless you want to try the powder, just go without. The noodle is good enough.
Dumpling 水饺
The dumpling is delicious without words to describe. :p
Cong Sou Dessert Shop
Location:
Unit G1, Holiday Inn Express,
No. 33, Sharp Street East,
Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Tel: +852 2278 2622
Hours: 12:30 - 00:30
The above picture was purposely taken darker to be able to see the shop's name. It is not a "black" shop, instead it's a highly recommended shop by many others and also recommended by me. :) Expect to queue!
This is a VERY durian dessert. I LOVE!!! I felt so guilty after having this letting the durian taste linger in my mouth. I sincerely apologise to mini bus people. :p
Don't get disappointed by the looks. It's a recommended dessert and yes! I recommend! It's SUPER longan! Refreshing and delicious.
Shek Mo Fong
Location:
88 Hak Po Street, Mongkok
Tel: +852 2398 9490
Hours: 14:45 - 02:00
A dessert at late hours, find it here!
Steamed milk egg topped with torched sugar and decorated with a small red bean. It's delicious and not too sweet. No doubt you can have another if your stomach allows.
With high expectation comes with high disappointment. We were so excited and expected it to be a cold dessert but it's actually a warm dessert. Mango and black glutinous wrapped with black rice wrapper. The black glutinous proportion is so much more than the mango that I can't really taste the mango. It would be better if it's cold.
Coconut noodle topped with fresh mango and mango puree with 3 sweet potato and yam balls (additional HKD6). It's nice and refreshing taste. Something different.
Tim Ho Wan, Dim Sum Specialist
Location:
Shop 12A, Hong Kong Station (Podium Level 1, IFC Mall) Central
Tel: +852 2332 3078
Hours: 09:00 - 21:00
They have many other outlets that you can go. The main one is at Mongkok which you must be prepared to queue for a very long time.
They have just this page of choices to order but will be able to keep you satisfied and full. Good things come in small package. ^_^
What we had...
Mun chicken feet with abalone sauce
It's tasty and I like the little saltiness from the abalone sauce. However, the feet's nails are still visible. If it an unbearable sight for you, then don't order.
Steamed rice roll stuffed with barbecued pork
The rice roll is very thick with little pork. It's just ok-ok.
Steamed beef ball with bean curd skin
This is one of people's recommended dish and I would recommend it if I don't dislike the chinese basil taste. It's minced beef ball with chinese basil. I'm not a fan of any basil. The meat is tender and juicy.
Steamed pork dumpling with shrimp
This is nice! It's a tightly squeezed dumpling which is fragrant and chewy.
Ha gao in Hong Kong has never disappoint me. I love the crunchiness of the shrimp. Cannot stop having more!
Steamed sparerib with black bean sauce
The pork is tender which is nice but it would be better with more black bean sauce. Not so satisfied.
Deep fried shrimp roll filled with shrimp
I got disappointed when this came with normal popiah skin rather than the bean curd skin. It's not bad but just tasted normal. It is a nothing-special dish.
A must-try!!! It's not too sweet and refreshing with a nice flower fragrant. No matter how full I was, I can have many of this. Good!
Yee Shun Milk Company
Location:
G/F, 506 Lockhard Road, Causeway Bay.
Tel: +852 2591 1837
Hours: 12:00 - 00:00
They are all over Hong Kong with about 3 more other outlets at Yau Ma Tei, Prince Edward and Jordan. They also have 2 outlets in Macau.
They have many choices but my all time favourite and the only thing I order from this place is...
Cold double skin milk pudding 雙皮燉奶 (HKD25)
The crumbled topped adds on the flavour to the milk pudding which I love. Even writing about it now make me crave for it. *tummy growl*
Lan Fong Yuen
Location:
Shop 26, LG, Chung King Mansion (Woodhouse), 36-44, Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
Tel: +852 2316 2311
Hours: 08:00 - 21:30
One of the traditional cha chan teng and yes! I do recommend! Unfortunately, I only went during breakfast with ONLY breakfast meals.
Macaroni with ham in tomato soup
My favourite! The soup is delicious to the last drop. Can I have another bowl? :p
Condensed milk toast
This is a must! If you love butter sugar toast, you will love this more. It's crunchy! Remember to eat it while it's hot!

Hong Kong - the food heaven
My first trip of 2012 - Hong Kong. I have been here many times and each time is about food rather than visiting places. Here comes the year's first food journey. ^_^
We tried...
(Locatable at the cross-junction of Bute Street and Tung Choi Street)
The meal started with an old looking tea pot. When was the last time you have seen such a tea pot? There is no choice of what type of tea you want. I think it's just a common Pu er tea. Other than drinking the tea, we use it to wash our cutleries.
Fried pork ribs in sweet and sour sauce
If you expected the thick sweet and sour sauce, you won't get it from this dish but the overall is nice.
Eggplants and minced pork in spicy sauce stew in pot
My favourite dish from this stall for the night. You can just eat the eggplants, minced pork with sauce on rice. They give you big fat eggplants and it's not overcooked. The minced pork is also cooked with dried salted fish and dried shrimps (maybe). Love it! :)
Stir-fried clams in black bean and chili sauce
This dish would taste better if it's less salty but the taste is nice.
Sam Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose (深井陳記燒鵝)
One of the oldest and famous roasted goose shop from Sam Tseng.
Location:
G/F, 427-427A Reclamation Street, Mongkok.
(near to Langham Place)
They have many other branches.
I personally don't know how to appreciate how a good goose should taste like. As long as the goose dance on my tongue, it's good. We didn't know how to order as we didn't have the menu. So we let the waitress auntie to order for us which didn't know what they actually were until they came.
We were hungry that I forgot to take a photo of the roasted goose before we splited it. The goose is nice with a fragrant skin and nice chewy taste of the meat.
Chicken rice (油雞飯)
The chicken is nice. I don't know what the small slices meat is called. It's a little cold but it's nice to eat.
Roasted pork rice (叉腩飯)
Roasted honey char siew and pork belly. The char siew is not the Malaysia type (burned) and it's a little hard. The pork belly is nicer.
The goose is still nice after a day if you plan to order takeaway.
Sen-ryo Japanese Restaurant (千両壽司)
This is just a random Japanese restaurant that we entered. Just want to try Hong Kong's Japanese restaurant.
Location:
Shop B06B, Basement, The Sun Arcade,
28 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
They have many other branches. Visit their website for more information at http://www.sen-ryo.com.hk/

We requested for ice cube and got ourselves an ice sphere. Interesting ~~~
Tuna and salmon belly sashimi
The salmon belly is fresh and nice but the tuna is not fresh enough. Yet, still edible taste.
Prime fatty tuna (top) and tuna (bottom)
Prime fatty tuna is the shop's recommended sushi and it's good. You would not want to eat the normal tuna after eating the prime fatty tuna. As for the normal tuna, it is weird that the tuna used on the sushi tasted better than the sashimi earlier. Nice!
Yung Kee Restaurant (鏞記)
This is one of the famous roast goose place known among tourists. It's expensive but it's still crowded. If you plan to go at peak hours, remember to make reservation.
Location:
32-40 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong
http://www.yungkee.com.hk/
We ordered...
Preserved eggs and pickled ginger
This is 1 serving. This is one of the speciality of this restaurant. It's the softness of the yolk that makes it special.
Stir-fried kai lan (芥藍菜)
Eating vegetables in Hong Kong usually focuses on whether the branch is crunchy and it's another successful story.
Ma po toufu (麻婆豆腐)
It's a little spicy and a little starchy. It's a nice dish to eat with rice but I would think that there's better cook out there for this dish.
Baked chicken in rock salt
This is quite a nice dish although it's baked in rock salt but it's not too salty. It can be eaten on it's own but not many at time. They also sprinkle on a little cube chilis and onion as decorations.
Chicken marinated in dark soya sauce and barbecue pork(桶子油雞,密汁叉燒)
The soya chicken is nicer than the char siew. This is not a good char siew for my taste.
Roasted goose (金牌燒鵝)
OK, being famous for roasted goose is no joke. The skin is fragrant and the meat is just the right chew taste.
Leaf dessert(玉葉粉麵甜品)
This shop is famous for the wanton noodle and desserts but we only have enough space for desserts.
Location:
2 Elgin Street, SOHO Central, Hong Kong
The famous ones and others...
The famous ones:
I don't usually like green bean dessert but I love this one! It's refreshing and fragrant!
South 南 - Rice ball with sugar coconut sesame (糖不甩)
Seriously good! The rice ball is cooked in ginger soup while coated with sugar, coconut and sesame as the name states it. I can have a plate on my own.
The others:
This red bean dessert has a very strong almond taste which I don't like. If you love almond dessert, you may like this.
North 北 - Cold sago with coconut (椰汁西米露)
It's coconut soup with sago. Just a normal sago dessert.
Hong Lin Restaurant (康年餐廳)
This is my favourite cha chan teng 茶餐廳 spot in Hong Kong so far.
Location:
143-145 Tung Choi Street, Prince Edward.
I love to come here for their pineapple bun with butter 菠蘿油. I think it's better than Kam Wah Cafe because it has a very nice bread fragrant. The top crust is most crispy when it's fresh out from the oven. If you want to takeaway, the bun's fragrant remains but of course the top crust would no longer be crispy. If you love bread, you will love this.
We then continued with the breakfast set...
Tortigloni with botsch (蘿宋湯蘿絲粉)
served with sausage & fried egg with butter bun
The botsch soup is very appetising with alot of vegetables and tortigloni pasta. I became so full that I could not finish the butter bun. Whole set for HKD28.
Satay beef with instant noodles (沙爹牛肉公仔麵)served with ham & egg sandwich
The instant noodle is nice but the satay beef is just so-so. One good thing about the satay beef is the beef is not hard to chew. The sandwich is a healthy one.
Dimdim Sum Dim Sum Specialty Store (點點心點心專門店)
Voted as 2011 Best dim sum award (最佳點心飲食獎) by Time Out Magazine.
Location:
G/F, 112 Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok , Kowloon.
Other branches:
G/F, Man Ying Street, Jordan, Kowloon
G/F, 7 Tin Lok Lane, Wanchai, Hong Kong
Recommended...
We tried...
Shrimp dumpling (晶瑩鮮蝦餃)
This is a standard dumpling wrap with prawn and pork meat. The prawn was not as expectedly crunchy but the overall taste is good.
Chicken feet (鳳爪)
Not too spicy for my taste with a little sweetness.
Salted egg bun (流沙包)
The salted egg is not as melted as I expected it to be and the salted egg taste is not strong enough but overall, still an ok item to order.
Crispy rice rolls with shrimp
This is rice roll wrap with some crispy fried butter-like flakes, chinese parsley and prawn. It was good with the crispy flakes but I personally don’t like the taste of chinese parsley.
Siu mai (蟹子燒賣皇)
I think this is normal Hong Kong standard siu mai.
Pineapple buns (真係菠蘿包)
You can taste real pineapple in this bun. However, it is canned pineapple and not fresh pineapple. I personally don’t like that taste of canned pineapple, so it’s just so-so for me.
Deep fried dumpling with wasabi
Oh-no! I would usually skip wasabi but I tried this as it’s a recommended. Pork with wasabi? The wasabi taste is not very strong, milder than wasabi you eat in sushi but still something that I would rather skip. If you're a wasabi lover, you would like this.
Fried stuffed eggplant with shrimp paste
The eggplant is so big that you can’t eat the eggplant and shrimp paste together but even if it’s eaten separately, it’s nice.
Steamed spareribs with black bean sauce
The spareribs is not hard to chew which I like but the black bean sauce taste is not strong enough.
Kam Wah Café (金華冰廳)
A famous shop for Pineapple bun We did not manage to eat-in as we weren’t hungry but just wanted to try the pineapple bun. The queue is long even for takeaways. The buns are best to be eaten hot.
G/F 47 Bute Street, Prince Edward, Kowloon.
(Locatable at the cross-junction of Bute Street and Tung Choi Street)
Pineapple bun (菠蘿包)
The top crust is not so crispy but the bun is soft. It is nicer to eat if you don’t press the bun together. It will become hard bun instead of soft bun. Eating the whole bun on your own will feel a little dry and the bun does not have nice bread fragrant.
Flatten pineapple bun |
Pineapple bun with butter (菠蘿油)
The top crust is crispier than the normal pineapple bun. The soft bun absorbs the melting butter which makes it taste better and not dry after eating the whole bun. Still lacking the bread fragrant.
Shing Kee (盛記 大排檔)
This is a place where you can experience eating at back lanes with only streetlights.
Opposite of 82, Stanley Street, Central
The meal started with an old looking tea pot. When was the last time you have seen such a tea pot? There is no choice of what type of tea you want. I think it's just a common Pu er tea. Other than drinking the tea, we use it to wash our cutleries.
There isn't much black bean you can eat only minced black dots. You would not want to think if those are real black beans :p . Just an alright taste.
Stir-fried choy sum with garlic
Yes, the presentation is horrible but it tastes good. The branch is crunchy with a little bit overcooked. I think it can be much more crunchy.

The roasted goose is the 2 pieces on the below right |
The chicken is nice. I don't know what the small slices meat is called. It's a little cold but it's nice to eat.
